Qatar held their nerve in a tense finish to defeat hosts Kenya by four runs in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League A at Ruaraka Sports Club Ground on Saturday, defending a total of 283 in a match that went down to the final overs.
After being asked to bat, Qatar were bowled out for 283 in 49.1 overs, with Zubair Ali leading the innings with a composed 92 from 102 balls. Kenya responded with a determined chase but were dismissed for 279 in 48.5 overs, falling just short of what would have been a valuable home victory.

Ali anchored Qatar’s innings with 13 fours, providing stability at the top of the order. Shahzeb Afridi added 43 from 39 balls, while captain Imal Liyanage contributed 34 from 34 deliveries. Muhammad Asim scored 37 and Daniel Archer added 33 to help Qatar build a competitive total despite regular wickets in the latter stages.
Kenya’s bowlers kept the scoring in check through the middle overs. Rakep Patel was particularly effective, claiming three wickets for 48 runs in his 10 overs, while Shem Ngoche and Vraj Patel picked up two wickets each. Sachin Gill also claimed two wickets as Qatar were dismissed with five balls remaining.
In reply, Kenya’s chase was built around Irfan Karim, who scored 86 from 105 deliveries, striking five fours. His innings gave the hosts a strong platform, but Qatar continued to take wickets at crucial moments, preventing Kenya from establishing the partnerships needed to control the chase.
Kenya remained in contention deep into the innings, with contributions from the middle and lower order keeping the required rate within reach. However, Owais Ahmed delivered the decisive spell, taking four wickets for 33 runs in 6.5 overs. His breakthroughs proved critical as Kenya lost their final wickets with just four runs separating the sides.

The result extends Qatar’s positive run after their five-wicket victory over Kuwait earlier in the round, when they chased down 332 with five wickets and 27 balls to spare. Their latest performance demonstrated a different strength: the ability to defend a total under pressure.
For Kenya, the narrow defeat comes after a convincing 103-run win over Denmark, in which Irfan Karim scored a century and the team posted 324 for seven. Saturday’s contest showed that Kenya remain competitive, but the fine margins in a closely fought match proved costly.
With the Challenge League A campaign continuing in Nairobi, both sides will be aware of the importance of consistency as they pursue progress towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 qualification pathway. Qatar will take confidence from another hard-fought win, while Kenya will look to turn their competitive performances into results in the matches ahead.
