ICC CWC Challenge League A

Denmark produced a remarkable bowling performance to defeat Qatar by 52 runs after vigorously defending a modest total of 120 to bowl their opponents out for 68.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Denmark struggled to establish momentum against a disciplined Qatar attack. Captain Hamid Shah top-scored with 44 off 61 balls, while Shangeev Thanikaithasan and Surya Anand contributed 21 runs apiece. However, regular wickets prevented Denmark from building substantial partnerships, and they were all dismissed in 36.2 overs.

Muhammad Asim led Qatar’s bowling effort with three wickets for 15 runs from seven overs. Mohammad Ikramullah Khan claimed two wickets for 31, while Owais Ahmed also took two for 22. Their efforts kept Denmark under pressure throughout the innings, leaving Qatar with what appeared to be a manageable target, a thought similar in the minds of everyone who watched the first innings.

Qatar’s reply began aggressively, with Shahzeb Afridi scoring 21 off just nine balls. However, Denmark struck early and continued to take wickets at regular intervals, preventing the chase from developing. Zubair Ali made five, while captain Mirza Mohammed Baig scored nine, as Qatar’s batting line-up were surprised by the same cup of tea served to their opponents with the ball during the first innings as their batters struggled to make double digits.

Saif Ahmad and Abdullah Mahmood shared eight wickets between them to dismantle the Qatar innings. Ahmad finished with four wickets for 31 runs, while Mahmood claimed four for 15. Qatar were dismissed for 68 in 16.2 overs, handing Denmark a convincing victory despite their own difficulties with the bat.

The result highlighted the importance of Denmark’s response with the ball, as they turned a low first-innings total into a decisive win through a compossed bowling and magical breakthroughs. For Qatar, the defeat was a disappointing setback after their commanding nine-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea earlier in the round.

With the final round of Challenge League A continuing in Nairobi, both teams remain focused on finishing their campaigns strongly in the competition.
