Papua New Guinea captain Assad Vala held his nerve to guide his side to a four-wicket victory over Denmark, completing a successful chase of 305 with five balls to spare in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League A at Ruaraka Sports Club Ground.
Chasing Denmark’s 304 for six, Papua New Guinea reached 307 for six in 49.1 overs, recovering from a late wobble to secure a crucial victory in a contest that remained in the balance until the closing stages.
Denmark had set the challenge through a superb unbeaten 114 from Lucky Ali Malik, whose innings provided the backbone of a competitive total. Captain Hamid Shah added 73 from 82 balls, while Musa Shaheen made 31 as Denmark’s top order laid a solid foundation.

The opening partnership between Shaheen and Shah yielded 68 runs before Semo Kamea broke through. Ali then took charge, combining patience with calculated aggression to reach his century and carry Denmark beyond 300. Taranjit Bharaj added a brisk 26 from 19 deliveries, while Kamea finished as Papua New Guinea’s leading wicket-taker with three for 64.
Papua New Guinea’s reply suffered an early setback when Sese Bau fell for nine, but Tony Ura and Lega Siaka quickly shifted the momentum. Ura struck 70 from 61 balls, while Siaka made 83 off 81 deliveries, with the pair adding 123 for the second wicket to put the chase firmly on course.
Patrick Nou continued the recovery with 54 from 60 balls, ensuring Papua New Guinea remained within reach of the target. However, Denmark fought back through Abdullah Mahmood, who claimed four wickets for 42 runs, removing Ura, Siaka and Nou before dismissing Dauncey Tom and Alei Nao in quick succession.
At 278 for six, the pressure was back on Papua New Guinea, with 27 runs still required. Vala responded with a composed unbeaten 61 from 67 balls, finding the right balance between caution and aggression as the game entered its final overs.
Supported by Kabua Morea, who finished unbeaten on 14, Vala guided his side through the closing stages. Their unbroken stand of 29 runs ensured Papua New Guinea crossed the line at 307 for six, completing one of the more demanding chases of the Nairobi round.
The victory was built on collective batting contributions, with four Papua New Guinea batters scoring half-centuries. Ura and Siaka provided the early momentum, Nou maintained the chase through the middle overs, and Vala delivered when the outcome was on the line.
For Denmark, Ali’s century and Mahmood’s four-wicket haul were outstanding individual efforts, but the side could not find the final breakthroughs needed to defend its total.
The result gives Papua New Guinea valuable momentum in the closing stages of the Challenge League A campaign. Denmark, meanwhile, will reflect on a match in which a strong batting performance was not enough, as Vala’s composure proved decisive in a tense finish in Nairobi.
